In 1830, when Louis-Philippe became king of France, one of his first projects was to restore the palace of Versailles and to establish it as a national museum. The prints below, sold by subscription in the earliest days of the museum of Versailles, were found at a brocante, grouped with original folios that are dated 1837, 1838, 1839 and 1840. The steel-cut engravings, printed on heavy laid paper, depict famous French personalities from the 12th to the early 19th century. Each print has an associated biography, in French, written by the famous historian, Théodose Burette. In 1842, the museum published a book using the pictures and biographies from the subscription series. Shown at the left is one of the folio covers; micro views can be seen <HERE> and <HERE.> Each Versailles museum engraving comes with its associated biographical sketch and will be shipped in a photo mailer.
