I bought a large group of antique prints that were produced by the museum at Versailles and sold by subscription in the very early 19th century. These prints, each still retaining its onion skin protective cover, are grouped in the original folios that are dated 1837, 1838, 1839 and 1840, like the page shown at the left. These steel-cut engravings, printed on heavy laid paper, depict famous French personalities from the 12th to the early 19th century. Each print has an associated biography, in French, written by the famous historian, héodose Burette. The museum later published a book (1842) using these pictures and biographies. Shown at the left is one of the folio covers and micro views can be seen <HERE> and <HERE.> Each Versailles museum print comes with its associated biographical sketch and will be shipped in a photo mailer. |
